What Is MGD and How Does It Relate to Dry Eye?

The meibomian glands in your upper and lower eyelids are meant to produce vital oils that lubricate the ocular surface and help keep your tears from evaporating.

Sometimes these glands become clogged, which limits their functionality and can lead to gland death. This condition is called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD.

MGD is a chronic, progressive condition responsible for 86% of Dry Eye Disease (DED). If left untreated, MGD can cause the signs and symptoms of dry eye to worsen over time.

What Is TearCare and How Does It Work?

TearCare is a highly effective, vigorously studied, FDA-cleared therapy for patients with DED associated with MGD.

In an in-office treatment, TearCare applies 15 minutes of precise, therapeutic heat to soften the hardened oils in your meibomian glands.

After the thermal cycle, your provider will manually remove the softened oils using a specialized clearance assistant.

Therapy Expectations

By unclogging your blocked meibomian glands, the TearCare system can help improve normal gland function and limit the progression of chronic MGD.

In clinical studies, TearCare was shown to be more effective at treating Dry Eye than Restasis, without the daily burden of drops.

There is no cure for dry eye. Before your therapy, we will take objective measurements of your signs and symptoms to monitor your progress over time.

Based on your signs and symptoms, we may recommend a retreatment with TearCare in six months.
